Overview & Reviews
A 5.9-liter V8 making 245 horsepower and 345 pound-feet torque powers the Grand Cherokee 5.9 Limited, making it the mightiest of all Jeeps. With the addition of the 5.9, the putrid Orvis model dies. Two new colors and "next-generation" airbags round out the changes.
- Lightweight unibody construction, excellent on and off-road manners, optional V-8, standard ABS, dual airbags, lots of standard equipment
- Spare tire hogs cargo area, engines hog gas, not as roomy inside as some competitors, price climbs rapidly as options are added

Good performer for a price - 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee
By iameziv - August 8 - 2:00 amWe bought this vehicle with about 26K miles it served us well until 6 months ago. After hitting 34k miles there are many electrical hickups (Lights, Info center, Alarm, The horn botton collapse) Then the water pump started leaking (replaced that one too) now the rear differential is making whiny noise and who knows how much that going to cost.

ConsumerReportsWasRight - 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee
By discustedwjeep - April 28 - 2:00 amI wish I had read Consumer Reports Before I bought my 98 Jeep...its a troublesome vehicle...in the shop more than out. I bought it new, and within the first year I had replaced the sunroof, differencial, and brakes. Since then its cost an average of $800 per year in maintenance "above" fair wear and tear to keep in on the road. I (and the Jeep dealer) cant get it to hold a tune-up, and therefore wont run right (cylinder misfiring issues every year) and needs air conditioning maintanence (not servicing) annually. MY ADVICE - DONT BUY ONE!

Review - 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee
By Nancy Meador - January 2 - 10:00 amThe differienial had to be repaired every 12 to 18 months thus making it unreliable when taking a trip out of town. This jeep required a lot of maintenance. The power steering and gas sensor had to be replaced. The heated seat repaired a number of times. It is difficult to lay the back seat down.

Back yard plant holder! - 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee
By 7774u - April 10 - 2:00 amI have had other Jeeps out there and this one is the first one that ever fell apart so fast out of the three. Unlike other Jeeps I had I dont trust the 4by system in this Jeep. It came with a Select Trac that does get me stuck at times unless you like to creep in low! The ABS light comes one with long trips resulting in a loss of power brakes and steering! It does have its up and downs and right now its and an all time low. I would probally have gave this Jeep a better rating if I had bought it brand new. I bought it 4 yrs old w/ 100k! I will say this truck has tried to hold up with me. Ive put 25k in 9 months until it died!

Its true Virginia, 5 stars are a myth - 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee
By leopold - September 8 - 10:00 amDealership incompetence and arrogance made a bad braking situation into a safety nightmare -with unpredictable failure of braking power twice narrowly escaping hitting a pedestrian. All the while over 9 months dealership claimed an inability to duplicate problem. The customer is stupid-- stupid. Finally the chip assembly for ABS was grudgingly replaced and problem resolved. Vehicle was essentially out of service for over 9 months due to fear of killing someone. This - from a five star dealer! Three years later Im still furious at the lousy treatment.

Transmission - 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee
By Ronald1522 - December 19 - 7:53 pmI really like my Jeep. It is roomy and a good solid ride. The only problem that I have is when shifting from reverse to drive it takes about 2 seconds for the transmission to engage. If you forget to wait the motor races and it slams into gear.

Unreliable - 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee
By jarmhand - August 26 - 2:00 amWe hit lots and lots of problems nearibg 100k. Had to replace alternator, radiator, faulty wiring, brakes and then the big one...transmission. Mechanic said he would go out of business if it wasnt for Chrysler transmissions. Think again if youre looking for a used SUV.

Too many hassles... - 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee
By MichaelBman - May 30 - 10:00 amJeeps are cool cars, dont get me wrong. However, I have had so many things go wrong with mine that I will not buy another one. The dealer guaranteed the car, but acted as if I was an idiot when I told them to fix certain things. I have had 3 bearings go bad ($300 a piece), A/C break, and many other things to give me a headache in the 2+ years Ive owned it. Good looking car, but a nightmare to upkeep.
